HOW IT WORKS

WHAT IS VISUALIZATION?

Your brain is your most powerful asset. Visualization is the daily practice of visualizing your goals or dreams in the finest detail, as if already attained. This powerful skill then accelerates your actual achievement of your dreams and goals. Visualization activates your creative subconscious to start generating creative ideas to achieve your desired goal or outcome. It programs your brain to recognize the resources you will need to achieve your dreams. It activates the law of attraction by drawing the people, resources and circumstances you need into your life to make your goals materialize.

Visualization plants new memories into your subconscious. You have to make these memories even more vivid and detailed than a real memory. Learning how to visualize with emotion is incredibly powerful. It requires learning how to create vivid, bright pictures in your mind.

Man has known the power of visualization for thousands of years – in the teachings of Buddhism, which originated in ancient India sometime between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE, reference was made to visualization:

“What you think you become. What you feel you attract. What you imagine you create.” (Buddha)

HOW DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK?

THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT

We have come a long way since the 80’s when we believed in the “just shut your eyes and see yourself successful” theory. Although helpful, it produced limited results. Through scientific research (Dr. Joe Dispenza) we now know that thoughts create frequencies, which vibrate and can be monitored. These vibrations enter the atmosphere and connect to and attract like vibrations of the same speed. To give you a classic example of feeling vibrations : You walk into an occupied room and instantly feel the atmosphere (tension or ‘vibes’) without a single word being said.

“The Law of Vibration says that everything moves, nothing rests. Everything is an expression of the same thing, the leaves, the trees, the cement, the body, it’s all energy but at a different rate of vibration. Your body is a molecular structure at a very high speed of vibration. As you activate brain cells you set up a vibration in your body. The vibration you are in is going to dictate what you are going to attract into your life. You will attract to you what you are in harmonious vibration with.”

The Visual Motor Rehearsal Experiment by Denis Waitly (PhD) – American motivational speaker, writer, and consultant and best-selling author of the audio series, “The Psychology of Winning” and books such as “ Seeds of Greatness” and “ the Winner’s Edge”.

Denis Waitly took a group of Olympic athletes and hooked them up on biofeedback equipment. He then had them run their event only in their mind. Incredibly, the same muscles fired in the same sequence when they were running the race in their mind as when they were running it on the track.

HOW CAN THIS BE?

The answer is: Your mind cannot distinguish whether you are really doing it, or whether it is just a mental practice run. In other words, the mind cannot differentiate a real memory from a practiced visualization that you have implanted into your brain.

A BIOLOGICAL EXPLANATION

There is a biological explanation behind the visualization phenomenon, which is called “Reticular Activating System (RAS)”. The RAS is a network of neurons in the brain that functions to ensure that our brain does not have to deal with more than it can handle. The RAS thus acts as a filter. It selects what will be noticed and given attention to by the conscious mind. The RAS notices what it believes to be important. It prioritises things that match the current content of our minds, beliefs, thoughts and emotions. Just think about that for a moment. Your RAS constantly looks for data in your environment that matches and reinforces your thoughts and belief systems and in so doing influences your actions. Therefore, you must positively program your RAS by visualizing your goals. In summary, visualization thus programs our subconscious mind to influence our conscious mind to make things happen.

GLOSSARY

Goals - The end result that you wish to achieve

When you set your goals, they must really excite you and propel you into action. They should give you a tingling in your stomach. This is your subconscious telling you through your body that you are on the right path and that you must go for it. Your goals should both scare and excite you at the same time.

Vizstory

A short story built around your goals – this is your visualization written down in a story form.

This is most important, because while visualizing you are likely to become distracted by random thoughts, i.e. “Did I put the washing on” or “ Did I drink my protein shake this morning?” A Vizstory will then assist you to re-align your thoughts and to refocus your mind.

We suggest that you read your Vizstory at least 3 times a day.

Affirmations

Affirmations are short and powerful statements we need to repeat over and over again affirming our new reality. They must be said out loud at least three times again. Add feemos to your affirmations.

Your affirmations must always start the same way – with a sense of gratitude.

I am so happy and grateful now that ….. ( say your goal as if you have already achieved it)

Remember that affirmations program your subconscious mind.

Next to your goals write down the feelings and emotions you would feel if you had already achieved them.

Vizboard - Commonly known as a vision board.

These are your goals in picture form placed on a board for you to constantly see.
Place photographs, drawings , sayings and quotes which inspire you on this board.

Pre-Viz - Pre visualisation rituals

It is important to be relaxed and comfortable. Some people prefer sitting in a comfortable chair, some prefer lying down on their bed (although be careful not to fall asleep).

Make sure that you choose a time when you are unlikely to be disturbed, preferably first thing in the morning and last thing at night. It is good practice to visualize at the same time each day. In this way you form a powerful success achieving habit. Start by visualizing 15 -20 minutes per session.

If you like, put on soft, relaxing music like for instance Café del Mar or Enya, or any other personal choice of inspiring music you respond well to. Some prefer to just sit quietly outside, listening to the sounds of nature – ie birds, or the crashing waves of the ocean, even just the slight breeze rustling through the trees.

Take a couple of minutes to relax and chill out. Now that you are comfortable, focus on your breathing. Pay attention to the rise and fall of your chest. Breathe slowly and deeply …. slowly and deeply. You will notice that your breathing will slow down and you will start to relax. Consciously let go of any tension in your body, feel yourself relaxing and becoming calm. Relax your shoulders, release the tension in your hands.

Now you are ready to visualize.
